<strong>Where\u2019s&nbsp;the Data?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a question that is being asked with increasing frequency, not only in discussions about research integrity, but also in the context of grant requirements, the evaluation of research output and scientific transparency.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Medical University of Silesia, we are dedicating Love Data Week 2026 to&nbsp;<strong>the practical aspects of open research data<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 without getting bogged down in theory, but with practical support for researchers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-2 kt-pane27596_06fb36-53\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\"><strong>What is open research data?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<p><strong>Open\u00a0Research\u00a0Data<\/strong>&nbsp;to dane uzyskane lub wytworzone w procesie badawczym, kt\u00f3re zosta\u0142y wykorzystane w pracy naukowej i s\u0105 udost\u0119pniane w spos\u00f3b umo\u017cliwiaj\u0105cy:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>free access,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reuse,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>verification of test results,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>replication or further analysis of the data.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Open research data can take various forms \u2014 from numerical and tabular data, through text, images and multimedia materials, to structured data and research documentation.&nbsp;<br>The key point is that&nbsp;<strong>information regarding the existence of the data should be publicly available<\/strong>, even if the data itself \u2014 for legitimate reasons \u2014 cannot be made fully open.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research data is collected and made available in, among other places:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>research data repositories,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>magazines of the type&nbsp;<em>data&nbsp;journals<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-14 kt-pane27596_067051-4b\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\"><strong>Why is research data so important today?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<p>Opening up research data is not just a matter of goodwill or trends in science. It is&nbsp;<strong>the consequence of systemic changes<\/strong>, which include research funding, grant-awarding bodies\u2019 policies and expectations of research institutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefits for science include, amongst others:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>improving the quality and reliability of research,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increasing the transparency of the research process,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reducing duplication of tests,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the opportunity to utilise unique data that cannot be collected again,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>better reproducibility and consistency of results,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the development of interdisciplinary cooperation,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increased visibility and citation rates of research,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an increase in public confidence in science,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>preparing data for analysis using AI technology,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the development of<em>citizen&nbsp;science<\/em>).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-15 kt-pane27596_51a4a9-7e\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\"><strong>Open access policy for research data<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<p><strong>Ministry of Science and Higher Education (2025)<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education published a document\u00a0<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.pl\/web\/nauka\/polityka-otwartego-dostepu-do-danych-badawczych-finansowanych-ze-srodkow-publicznych2\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gov.pl\/web\/nauka\/polityka-otwartego-dostepu-do-danych-badawczych-finansowanych-ze-srodkow-publicznych2\"><strong>\u2018Policy on open access to publicly funded research data\u2019<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This document&nbsp;<strong>is not prescriptive<\/strong>, but:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>sets the direction for action,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>brings existing initiatives under one umbrella,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sets out the objectives and a plan for achieving them.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>G\u0142\u00f3wnym celem polityki jest stworzenie ram zapewniaj\u0105cych&nbsp;<strong>the security and accessibility of publicly funded research data<\/strong>, in accordance with the principle:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>\u201cAs open as possible, as closed as necessary\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>(<em>as open as&nbsp;possible, as&nbsp;closed&nbsp;as&nbsp;necessary<\/em>)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This policy is aimed at:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>universities and research institutes,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>research funding agencies (NCN, NCBR),&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>scientists,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the private and education sectors,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>participants in civic education.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-16 kt-pane27596_d3701a-ae\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\"><strong>National Science Centre \u2013 research data&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<p>At national level, it is of key importance that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncn.gov.pl\/aktualnosci\/2025-06-26-nowe-zasady-open-access-w-ncn\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ncn.gov.pl\/aktualnosci\/2025-06-26-nowe-zasady-open-access-w-ncn\">Order No. 39\/2025 of the Director of the National Science Centre dated 26 June 2025<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0regarding the policy on the publication of research results.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although certain rules regarding Open Access publishing were relaxed in 2025 (for example, publications under the closed-access model were permitted)&nbsp;<strong>the rules concerning research data remained unchanged<\/strong>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research data should be made available regardless of the article\u2019s publication model<\/strong>,&nbsp;<br>provided there are no substantive grounds for restricting their availability&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, the NCN has also required&nbsp;<strong>planu zarz\u0105dzania danymi (DMP)<\/strong>&nbsp;as part of grant applications.&nbsp;<br>The NCN guidelines can be regarded as&nbsp;<strong>a practical framework for DMP<\/strong>, which is then developed during the project implementation phase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-6 kt-pane27596_733b9b-4e\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\"><strong>Horizon Europe and the FAIR principles<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<p>On the programme&nbsp;<strong>Horyzont Europa<\/strong>&nbsp;The European Commission requires beneficiaries to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>open access to academic publications,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>responsible management of research data,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to ensure that data complies with the rules&nbsp;<strong>FAIR<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>FAIR means that data should be:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Findable<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 mo\u017cliwe do odnalezienia,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accessible<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 dost\u0119pne,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interoperable<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;interoperacyjne,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reusable<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 mo\u017cliwe do ponownego wykorzystania.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Research data repositories, such as\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ppm.sum.edu.pl\/index.seam?lang=en&amp;cid=38682\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ppm.sum.edu.pl\">PPM \u015aUM<\/a><\/strong>are one of the key tools for putting these principles into practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-16 kt-pane27596_e8560b-fe\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\"><strong>PPM \u015aUM \u2013 a repository of publications and research data<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ppm.sum.edu.pl\/index.seam?lang=en&amp;cid=38682\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ppm.sum.edu.pl\">\u015aUM Medical Platform (PPM \u015aUM)<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is the university\u2019s repository, which serves a dual purpose:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Research data repository<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a systematically managed digital platform that enables:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>storage,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sharing,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>archiving of research data,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>long-term data availability,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>linking data to publications and research projects.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Publications repository<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform provides permanent access to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>scientific articles,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reports,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>other research materials,  promoting open access and the visibility of the University of Silesia\u2019s research output.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-16 kt-pane27596_84603d-18\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\"><strong>Open research data in the internal records of the Medical University of Silesia<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aktyprawne.sum.edu.pl\/?number=127%2F2018\">Resolution No. 127\/2018 of the Senate of the Medical University of Silesia dated 24 October 2018 (in Polish)<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open-door policy <a href=\"https:\/\/ppm.sum.edu.pl\/index.seam?lang=en&amp;cid=38682\">Polskiej Platformy Medycznej \u015aUM<\/a> refers directly to the research data.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution emphasises, among other things:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the need to draw up and update data management plans,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the aim of making data and metadata openly available,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the importance of long-term data archiving,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the responsibility of data creators for the accuracy, traceability and usability of the data,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the role of a repository as the primary repository for research data.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-16 kt-pane27596_c11175-13\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\"><strong>How do I deposit research data with PPM \u015aUM?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<p><strong>Repository and Open <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The training will help participants\u00a0<strong>to deposit research data efficiently and securely in the Medical University of Silesia Repository \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/ppm.sum.edu.pl\/index.seam?lang=en&amp;cid=38682\">Polish Medical Platform \u015aUM<\/a><\/strong>.
